Highlights from Beyond the Brush – Innovative Oral Care Solutions
In collaboration with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and supported by several esteemed principals, Jebsen & Jessen Ingredients Singapore and Malaysia recently hosted the “Beyond the Brush: Innovative Oral Care Solutions” seminar. This hybrid event, featuring both a seminar and an in-person workshop, showcased the latest innovations in oral care and hygiene.
Innovations and Beyond
On August 22, our team in Singapore and Malaysia hosted an oral care event, “Beyond the Brush: Innovative Oral Care Solutions” at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. We had the privilege to partner with some of the most eminent suppliers in the industry for this event, namely Greenin Bio-Tech, Evonik, and Oryza Oil & Fat Chemicals. Apart from being some of the latest advancements in oral care, the featured products are more sustainably and ethically manufactured than current options, paving the way for a greener future.
Sharings from the Experts
This event consisted of a hybrid seminar and an in-person workshop. The morning seminar was delivered by experts from our principals and our own team, introducing market trends and our featured products. This was followed by an afternoon hands-on session where attendees produced their own sample formulations.
Miss Orranit Yodjan and Miss Nichakan Saengpetch, our Personal Care Lab Manager and Lab Specialist, kick-started the seminar with their introduction. They provided an overview of the workshop, existing products in the market, as well as its trends and data. They then presented their insights on oral care ingredients and guideline formulations, which laid the foundation for the succeeding presentations.
Miss Daisy Zheng from Greenin Bio-Tech Co., Ltd., our liquorice extract partner, was the first to present their product, GREENIOV-SENSKIN II. This dipotassium glycyrrhizate extract has anti-inflammatory, anti-irritation, anti-bacterial, and soothing effects. It has been incorporated as an active ingredient within oral care products especially in Japan and China to improve protection against periodontal diseases.
Mr. Paiput Ratnapradipa from Evonik Industries shared insights into dental silica solutions in the Zeodent® and Spherilex® series, highlighting not only the manufacturing processes of synthetic silica materials but also diving into their practical functions and applications – as mild abrasives, thickening agents and gentle polishing properties necessary in toothpaste formulations.
Last but not least, Miss Noriko Sakamoto from Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical Co., Ltd. introduced two natural botanical extracts. Their Sichuan pepper extract, SalivaMoist™, contains Sichuan pepper oil that allows it to inhibit the proliferation of dental caries bacteria (S. mutans) and periodontal disease bacteria (P. gingivalis). The active ingredient hydroxyl-a-sanshool present in Sichuan pepper oil promotes saliva production, so this extract is used in mouthwash products to alleviate mouth dryness.
Hands-On Lab Session
After the seminar, the event moved away from the conference room and into the laboratory, where we hosted an interactive hands-on workshop. Under the guidance of our team of specialists, participants were offered the opportunity to create three oral hygiene products using ingredients from Greenin Bio-Tech, Evonik, and Oryza Oil and Fat Chemical. Our lab equipment was supported by IKA.
Pump-it-right Toothpaste: This session showcased a Pump Toothpaste, which has been gaining popularity among kids and pets toothpaste products. This is due to its relatively low viscosity, which increases the ease of handling. Products featured include: Evonik – Zeodent 120, Zeodent 165, Spherilex 148; Greenin Bio-Tech – Greeniov-Senskin II; Schill+Seilacher – Perlastan L30, Polyfix ZRC 25GP.
Gargle Glow Mouthwash: Customers were encouraged to use their creativity and play around with the natural extracts presented in the seminar. This includes the liquorice extract (Greeniov-Senskin II) from Greenin Bio-Tech, and the Sichuan pepper extract (SalivaMoist) and perilla seed extract from Oryza Oil and Fat Chemical.
See-through Smile Toothpaste: In this session, we returned to basics. Participants tried to create a white toothpaste using our guidance formulation. Products featured include: Evonik – Zeodent 165, Spherilex 148; Greenin Bio-Tech – Greeniov-Senskin II; Schill+Seilacher – Perlastan L30, Polyfix ZRC 25GP.
We were delighted to see our participants enjoying themselves and making friends as they created these formulations in small groups.
Sustainability Beyond the Brush
This event spotlighted natural extracts, aligning with our focus in Jebsen & Jessen Ingredients Singapore & Malaysia this year, which is to gear towards greener and more sustainable processes and formulations. We sincerely hope that our event has not only shed a light on technological advancements in the oral care industry, but has also inspired our participants to consider sustainable ingredients and gear towards green chemistry.

“To learn more about toothpaste ingredients… This is one of the best ways to explore the current ingredients that are out in the market right now, because there is so much new ingredients innovation now, with silica, flavours, surfactants, and so on… The right way is to explore, ask questions, and see what is a fit for you…”
“… for cosmetics we are geared towards sustainability, green, and also ethical, so what we learn is about products that are more green, that are more sustainable, and which we can use for our future formulations…”

“… mostly the natural products like liquorice you use in dental… that was new for me … And different dental products besides toothpaste and mouthwash like tablets and other innovative dental care products.”
